March 9: Reading Chudacoff, Burnham, & Cronon

by Mark Tebeau | March 8th, 2010

For today, we will discuss Chapters 5 through 8 in Chudacoff, as well as Daniel Burnham on ECR (under Tebeau, HIS400, not 304). Read only Chapters 1 through 3.  Helpful reading might also include, Lizabeth Cohen, Living and Working in Chicago in 1919, also on ECR. Also, review, the following online exhibit about the Plan of Chicago, http://burnhamplan100.uchicago.edu/. By the end of class, we will have full sense of urban life during the first third of the 20th century.
